Before planting add compost to the soil area up to 2 inches thick and incorporate deeply. Addition of compost is especially important on poorly drained and very sandy soils. Compost aerates clay soils and helps them drain, and it increases the capacity of sandy soils to retain nutrients and water. Compost is less important on rich, loamy soils. Dig or rototill soils in an area up to 10 feet wide for each plant. If soil is compacted just below the surface, be sure to dig or use a pick axe to loosen the soil down to about 2 feet deep and wide before planting. If it is too compacted, use a raised planter. Plant healthy bare root 1-year-old vines available from retail nurseries. Cuttings may also be collected from healthy vines and planted directly where the vine is to grow permanently.
