Viticultural Information
Burger
Description
Species: Vitis vinifera Vines have moderate vigor and recumbent shoots. The variety grows well on fertile soils of medium texture; avoid extremely coarse soils if close management of water and nutrients is not possible. Vine spacing within rows is about 7 to 8 feet. Sandy soils with low zinc availability may increase flower set problems, and high productivity can induce potassium deficiency that resembles leafroll virus symptoms. Burger does not ripen well in cool climates. Burger is well suited to spur pruning. If vertical cordons or bilateral cordons are used, 12 to 16 two-node spurs are acceptable, depending on rootstock, soil depth, and soil texture. Cane pruning may result in severe overcropping and reduced shoot vigor.
