Growing Grapes in Your Backyard
How do I provide structural support for the vines?
Overview
![]() Strong structural support is needed to support the vines and crop; this can be a trellis, an arbor, or a fence. Many gardeners grow grapes on an arbor to provide both shade and fruit. A trellis provides the easiest method for growing grapes since no ladder is required to manage the vines and crop. Grapes can also be grown on a fence, although there may be limitations such as shading on one side if the fence is solid, easier access to the fruit by rodents, or difficulty pruning or harvesting if a chain link fence is used. The use of strong wire is essential because wire of insufficient gauge will sag excessively. Use wire of 12 to 14 gauge (the lower the number, the thicker the wire). Most growers use 12-gauge wire.
