How should I prepare my garden for planting?
Overview
Prepare your soil carefully BEFORE you plant. Many vegetable gardens benefit from applications of organic matter or fertilizers prior to planting. Suggested pre-plant application rates include mostly materials high in potassium and phosphates. Nitrogen will be most effectively used by the plants if part is added later—usually when direct seeded plants have 4-6 true leaves or 4-5 weeks after transplants have been set out.
